A flat tea caddy (hira-natsume 平棗) made by Ichigo Itchō 一后一兆 (1898-1991). The wood body is finished in polished black lacquer (roiro) and decorated with images of distant mountains (enzan 遠山), sprinkled and polished (togidashi maki-e) in gold and aokin (alloy of gold and silver). The interior and the base are finished in fine silver lacquer and rims in gold lacquer.
Signed underneath Itchō saku 一兆作 ("Made by Itchō"). Inside the lid is an abbreviated signature (kaō) in red by the 15th head (iemoto) of the Urasenke tea ceremony school Hōunsai 鵬雲斎 (*1923) who also inscribed inside the lid of the wooden box Yama hira-natsume 山平棗 ("Flat tea caddy with mountains"), indicating this item as a high-class tea ceremony tool.
In excellent condition; comes with fitted wooden box (tomobako) signed at the side enzan hira-natsume Itchô saku 遠山平棗一兆作 ("Distant mountains tea caddy made by Itchō") and sealed Itchō 一兆; wrapping cloth (tomogire) sealed Itchō 一兆.
